Long Island Aquarium, May 2013
What is the perfect anniversary present for a husband who does not like presents? A Shark Dive!
S had been talking of doing this cage dive surrounded by sharks ever since he had seen it on a documentary. Diving in the sea was out of the question for two reasons: a) it was the month of May b) The thought of having to dive again terrified me and I really wanted to do this with him!
I did some research and found something which was perfect. The aquarium at Long Island was offering caged shark dives in their shark tank. Well, this was a fairly smallish tank so you were bound to be surrounded by the sharks at all times and what comforted me was that it was a mask which covered your entire face, well sort of. It was still a little too much breathing through the mouth for my comfort but I was confident of holding my own and not having a panic attack.
Overall, this was a wonderful way to celebrate our first anniversary and a truly unique experience! One day we shall conquer the seas!

Before we were lowered into the water our instructor gave us clear instructions: stay calm, keep breathing, do not wrap your fingers around the bars of the cage itself, do not touch anything. She also warned us the minute either of us did anything stupid like stick our hand out, she was going to give to signal to pull us out immediately. Then once we were all set, we stepped into the cage and gave the signal, at which, her assistant started lowering us in with this large chain like contraption. To say, the water was frigid was an understatement, despite our swimsuits and complete wet suits on top, it took a few minutes for us to not shiver. They lowered us in little by little and I loved how she kept checking if I was comfortable since she could see how nervous I was.
My key focus was to not obsess over my breathing but to look at everything around me. S was predictably so fascinated with everything that I don't think he even realized we were in the cage with him. When the sharks swam so close to us that we could touch them, there was a thrill despite knowing that this was an aquarium. I can only imagine how much more majestic they would be in their natural environment.
